To Apologize, Or Not to Apologize
Controversy, as delimit by Websters Dictionary, is a discussion marked specially by the expression of opposing views. Everyone is familiar with controversies such as the Iran-Contra affair and the Watergate scandal. One that might hit a undersize closer to home involves one of the most beloved childrens movie companies of all time: Walt Disney. When Pocahontas was in production, the modern day Powhatan nation offered to collaborate with Disney during its inception. Their intent was that the story be make as historically accurate as possible. Disney declined this offer and sooner insisted that it would handle the details on its own.
When the movie was released, the Powhatan people were outraged. They claimed that, apart from completely disregarding historical facts, Disney had propagated the myth that Pocahontas and John smith were in love. Disney was also accused of circulating the age-old separate that Indians are ignorant savages. The Powhatan nation was unwilling to accept that these modifications were do simply in the name of creative license and for the interest group of a good story.
They demanded that Disney corporately apologize for the wrongs done against the heritage of their nation. still truthfully, no apology should be given.
One of the biggest reasons that an apology would be unnecessary is that Pocahontas is simply a childrens movie. The ultimate inclination was amusement, not historical accuracy.
